All referrals to the Service are discussed in our weekly multi-disciplinary team referrals meeting and are triaged according to urgency (this is based on diagnosis, past medical history and reason for referral). We aim to see all clients within 12 weeks of the date the referral is received and the client will be contacted either by telephone or letter with an offer of appointment.
For all long term prescription referrals, if the client has been referred from a source other than their Local Wheelchair Service, we have to gain agreement from the Local Wheelchair Service before an appointment can be offered as it is the local service which holds the budget.
The exceptions to this are for clients referred for a toilet seat assessment, as these pieces of equipment are not funded through the Wheelchair Services (see Services for more information) and clients referred through the Rehabilitation Assessment and Provision Service, as this Service is provided to inpatient units where the clients are not yet known to a Local Wheelchair Service.
We are committed to team working and encourage referrers to attend our initial assessment appointments and any subsequent follow up’s as it can help identify specific needs and ways to work towards these needs. However, this is not a requirement.
