The prosthetics and amputee rehabilitation service is a dedicated service for the people who have undergone an upper or lower limb amputation arising from trauma, disease or congenital problems.
The service also provides a paediatric clinic along with a transition clinic for young people.
Who is the service for?
The service is for anyone requiring rehabilitation due to limb loss, following surgery (or congenital deformity) that may benefit from provision of an artificial limb (prosthesis) or support regarding other aspects related to the limb deficiency.
Referral Process
Your hospital consultant will usually refer you but your GP or any other health professional involved in your care can refer you. You may be seen initially by one of our team whilst you are still an inpatient or you may attend the centre directly as an outpatient. You will receive an appointment within 18 weeks of referral.
A multidisciplinary team consisting of Rehabilitation Consultant, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Prosthetist and Counselling clinicians will assess you. If you are assessed as being suitable for a limb you have a period of pre prosthetic rehabilitation, before being measured for a limb. You will then have regular appointments with your Prosthetist and further Physiotherapy involvement providing rehabilitation on your prosthetic limb. The service is consultant led and you will be followed up by your consultant at 2 months, 6 months and 12 months.
