Multiple Sclerosis Specialist Clinic

Assessment and advice to increase independence and quality of life for adults with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

About our service

We provide assessment and advice to increase independence and quality of life for adults with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Who is the Service for?

Adults with Multiple Sclerosis and complex needs, and those whose needs change following a progression of their condition.

Referral Process

A referral can be made by any healthcare professional. This goes to a pooled referrals meeting held weekly. If appropriate you will receive an appointment letter with some information about the clinic within 18 weeks of your referral being received by us.  Pre-clinic questionnaires will be sent with your appointment letter which we would be grateful for you to complete and bring with you to your appointment.

What will happen in the clinic?

You may see a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, a nurse, a Physiotherapist or an Occupational Therapist.  There is also access to Clinical Counselling, Clinical Psychology and Speech and Language therapy.  Family and carers are welcome to attend.

What we do at an assessment?

We will ask you about your MS and how it affects your daily activities. We will also ask you questions about your current concerns and problems. You may also have a physical examination to look at strength, coordination, flexibility and physical abilities. It is helpful to bring a list of your current medications with you. Please also bring any splints and walking aids that you regularly use.

What happens after the assessment?

We will discuss our findings and recommendations with you. This may include further assessments or input from other healthcare professionals at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, or we may make referrals to local services. All onward referrals will be agreed with you before being made. We will then agree if you need to be seen again in this clinic, and if so when. After the clinic a letter is sent back to your referrer and a copy is sent to your GP. You can receive a copy of this letter if you wish.

Our patients and their carers and families are the reason we're here, so we want to hear your views about the Trust and our services.
