Neuromuscular Specialist Clinic

We assess and treat the needs of patients with neuromuscular conditions.

About our service

The Neuromuscular Specialist Clinic offers an assessment to highlight any needs of symptom management or difficulties which people with neuromuscular conditions are experiencing. We aim to help maintain independence or in adapting to changes which affect social and domestic life.

The team are happy to discuss with patients, the treatments that are available and suitable to prevent complications or related health problems.

Who is the service for?

People who have long-term conditions affecting nerves and muscles. Some of these conditions include Muscular Dystrophy, post Polio syndrome and Diabetic Neuropathy.

Referral process

We accept referrals from GP’s, Consultants, health care professionals, people affected by numerous conditions, carers and voluntary agencies.

Those being referred must have a neurological and muscle disorder and be over 16 years of age. (We do not usually accept referrals for people with Motor Neurone Disease as there is a dedicated service for people with this condition.)

We may contact the GP of a person being referred for up to date medical information.

What will happen in the clinic?

You will be seen by members of the multidisciplinary team including a Consultant in Rehabilitation medicine, Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist. We provide a broad assessment of need and discuss symptoms or difficulties people are experiencing with them. The team has access to Speech and Language Therapy, Psychology and Clinical Counselling.

What happens after the assessment?

Team members work directly with patients where further assessment or advice is indicated. Referrals are made when further medical investigations are needed. We also work in liaison with local services, voluntary organisations and by accessing other services within the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre.

Review appointments to the clinic offered to help with ongoing rehabilitation needs.
